THE STORY

The orange wall from the Geneva underground: digital dub, steppers pressure, restless production and a crew built to test music in the session before anywhere else.

GO DEEPER

O.B.F., short for Original Bass Foundation, formed in the Geneva underground in 2002 around Rico, G and Stef. The collective grew as a sound system, production crew, label and promoter, with its orange speaker wall becoming one of the most recognizable sights in contemporary European dub. Their music is rooted in sound-system function rather than one studio subgenre. Heavy digital riddims, militant steppers, dancehall vocals and electronic bass all move through the catalog, while Dubquake nights and Dubquake Records connect the records back to the room. Albums including “Wild,” “Signz,” “LAVA” and the Iration Steppas collaboration “Revelation Time” show a system that treats dub as a live network of producers, singers, selectors and audiences.

How they stand with the others

Came togetherDubquake nights, the label and the speaker system are as central to O.B.F.’s identity as its albums.
