Shabba Ranks recorded “Dem Bow” for producer Bobby “Digital” Dixon in 1990 on a dancehall rhythm associated with the era’s computerized production. Musically, the track’s rhythmic pattern became far more influential than its original lyric, which reflected attitudes in Jamaican dancehall that should not be confused with the later meanings the word “dembow” acquired elsewhere. The recording circulated through Latin Caribbean scenes and became a reference point as artists and DJs in Panama and Puerto Rico developed music that would later be called reggaeton. Over time, “dembow” became the name for a characteristic rhythmic pulse rather than simply Shabba’s song title.
