Jamaican rhythm found a different home in Aotearoa. Māori and Pasifika musicians used reggae to speak about land, racism, migration, nuclear testing and Pacific life, creating a scene that sounded local because the story was local.

Reggae reached Aotearoa New Zealand in the 1970s and became especially meaningful among Māori and Pacific communities. By the early 1980s, bands such as Herbs, Aotearoa and Dread Beat and Blood were using Jamaican rhythm while writing from South Pacific experience. Herbs’ “What’s Be Happen?” arrived in 1981 amid the Springbok Tour, Bastion Point memory and the aftermath of the Dawn Raids, making Pacific reggae both musical and political. The lineage kept changing rather than staying fixed in roots reggae. Later Aotearoa artists mixed dub, soul, electronic music, hip-hop and jazz into local bass culture. Fat Freddy’s Drop, formed in Wellington in 1999, became one of the most internationally visible examples of that broader evolution.
Where the history is argued
- “Pacific reggae” is a useful regional phrase, but Māori, Samoan, Tongan and other Pacific experiences within Aotearoa are not one homogeneous culture.
How they stand with the others
Took rootMāori and Pasifika artists used reggae to articulate local political and cultural experience rather than simply reproduce Jamaican subject matter.
Aotearoa and Hawai‘i developed different reggae histories and should not be merged into a generic “island reggae” branch.
