One-Drop

THE STORY

A reggae drum feel built around what is missing: beat one is left open while kick and snare land together later in the bar. The space gives bass, voice and offbeat guitar room to breathe.

GO DEEPER

One-drop became one of reggae’s most recognizable drum approaches. Rather than hammering the first beat, the groove leaves that opening empty and places the main kick/snare accent later in the measure, creating the suspended, rolling feel heard across classic roots reggae. Carlton Barrett of Bob Marley & The Wailers became one of the style’s great masters, but one-drop belongs to a wider Jamaican rhythmic history rather than one drummer. By the mid-1970s, musicians such as Sly Dunbar were developing harder alternatives including rockers, proving that reggae never had only one legitimate drum beat.

Where the history is argued

  • Musicians and writers describe the exact counting of “one-drop” in slightly different ways. The defining idea is the absence of a strong beat-one kick and the concentrated drum accent later in the bar.

How they stand with the others

Came beforeRockers and steppers expanded the drum vocabulary rather than replacing one-drop completely.
