THE STORY

Singer, musician and producer with one foot in roots reggae and the other in the studio wiring. Stephen helped shape major records by his family before his own GRAMMY-winning solo run.

GO DEEPER

Stephen Marley first became widely known through Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, singing, playing and helping produce the group’s records. Behind the scenes he became a crucial architect of the family’s modern sound, producing Damian Marley’s Halfway Tree and Welcome to Jamrock and building Chant Down Babylon around Bob Marley vocals and contemporary hip-hop guests. His solo work moves differently. Mind Control opened a broad reggae, soul and hip-hop palette in 2007; Revelation Part I leaned into roots; Revelation Part II followed reggae’s outward branches; Old Soul stripped the room back to songs, family memory and live musicians. Stephen’s importance is not only inheritance. It is arrangement, production and the ability to make different generations occupy the same record.

How they stand with the others

Studio influenceStephen’s production on family projects is as central to his story as his solo vocals.

Crossed overChant Down Babylon placed contemporary rappers beside Bob Marley recordings, making the reggae–hip-hop bridge explicit before Stephen’s solo debut.
