Handsworth reggae speaking directly from Black Britain. Steel Pulse turned racism, policing, African history and everyday survival into a full-band roots sound built for both protest and festival stages.

Steel Pulse formed in Birmingham’s Handsworth district in the mid-1970s, led by David Hinds and rooted in the experience of Black British youth. Their early records and live shows connected Jamaican roots reggae to British racism, policing and National Front-era politics without pretending Birmingham was Kingston. Handsworth Revolution in 1978 gave that local voice an international platform. The group kept widening its sound through True Democracy, Earth Crisis and Babylon the Bandit, which won the 1987 GRAMMY for Best Reggae Recording. Steel Pulse’s longevity matters because the band never became only a heritage act: later work such as Mass Manipulation returned directly to racial injustice, migration and human rights.
