THE STORY

The Crown Prince of Reggae could sound youthful, wounded and commanding in the same line. From a child singer at Studio One to roots anthems and dancehall-era hits, Dennis Brown became Jamaica’s singer’s singer.

GO DEEPER

Dennis Brown began recording while barely into his teens, cutting “No Man Is an Island” for Coxsone Dodd after first attracting attention as a child performer. His voice matured in public through work with Derrick Harriott, Niney the Observer, Joe Gibbs and many others, moving from covers and love songs into roots records such as “Westbound Train,” “Cassandra” and “Wolf & Leopards.” Brown’s range kept him central as reggae changed. He could carry lovers material, roots warning and later digital production without losing the grain of his voice. Bob Marley reportedly called him his favorite singer, and Jamaican audiences made “Crown Prince of Reggae” more than a marketing nickname. Brown died in 1999 at only forty-two, leaving an enormous and unevenly documented catalog.
