Augustus Pablo
A melodica made uncanny and beautiful. Augustus Pablo built a minor-key “Far East” sound around breath, space and deep riddims, then became a producer whose Rockers records sit at the heart of 1970s roots and dub.

Horace Swaby was a teenage keyboard player and sound-system enthusiast when producer Herman Chin Loy put his melodica on record and gave him the Augustus Pablo name. The instrument was familiar as a schoolroom object; Pablo made it sound lonely, devotional and futuristic. “Java” in 1972 helped establish him, and his minor-key instrumental language became known as the Far East sound. Pablo was also a producer and label builder through Rockers. His partnership with King Tubby produced “King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown,” one of dub’s defining albums, while Pablo’s productions for Hugh Mundell, Jacob Miller and others gave roots reggae a meditative, unmistakable atmosphere.

Pablo was both instrumentalist and producer; treating him only as “the melodica guy” misses the Rockers label and the artists he developed.
