THE STORY

Psychedelic downtempo with dub in its bloodstream: deep bass, long delays, global instrumentation and studio worlds that keep folding in on themselves. Ott, Shpongle and Gaudi are major doors in.

GO DEEPER

Psydub is a community term for music where psychedelic electronic production, ambient or downtempo pacing and dub-derived bass and effects meet. It grew around the late-1990s and 2000s psybient and chill-out world rather than from one Jamaican or British scene. Shpongle helped define the broader psybient imagination; Ott made the dub connection especially explicit; Gaudi built long-running bridges among reggae, dub and electronics. The label is useful for navigation but not a tightly policed genre. Some records lean toward psytrance, some toward ambient dub, world music or festival bass. The honest center is a production language: spacious low end, delay, layered sound design and psychedelic transformation.
