Aswad
West London roots that learned how to live on both sides of the chart. Aswad moved from hard Black British reggae to polished pop crossover while keeping dub, bass and community memory inside the band.
Aswad formed in West London in the mid-1970s and became one of Britain’s first major homegrown Black reggae bands. Early albums such as New Chapter and Hulet were rooted in the politics and daily life of Black Britain, with the band building its own instrumental identity rather than serving as a backing group for visiting Jamaican singers. Their dub work, especially New Chapter of Dub, became influential in its own right. In the late 1980s, “Don’t Turn Around” and “Give a Little Love” brought Aswad major pop success. That shift can divide listeners, but the full story needs both sides: militant British roots and a band capable of carrying reggae rhythm into mainstream radio.
