THE STORY

Windrush families strung up systems in basements and blues dances from the late 1950s. The first great home of the music away from home.

GO DEEPER

The United Kingdom is the first great home of the music away from home. Windrush-generation families brought sound-system culture into basements and blues dances from the late 1950s; their children built Lovers Rock, UK dub, steppers and dub poetry — and a bass culture whose later children (jungle, dubstep) still carry dub’s low-end teaching through UK music.
