TUFF GONG INTERNATIONAL
The Marley family turned the old Federal Records complex into a working Jamaican music institution. Recording, rehearsal, vinyl pressing and distribution keep the site tied to both the island’s past and its next sessions.
The Marcus Garvey Drive complex has a history older than Tuff Gong. Ken Khouri’s Federal Records operated there as a recording and manufacturing center before the Marley family acquired the property in 1981. Rita Marley completed the purchase and moved Tuff Gong International operations into the former Federal facility. That continuity gives the site unusual weight: one of Jamaica’s foundational industrial recording spaces became a Marley-family studio, pressing and distribution operation rather than a museum frozen in one era. In March 2026 the studio reopened after a major refurbishment, retaining the historic recording and voicing rooms while updating the facility for new artists, rehearsal and collaboration.
