Samba-reggae is a genuine hybrid, created in mid-1980s Salvador da Bahia when bloco afro drum orchestras — above all Olodum under Neguinho do Samba — folded reggae’s groove and Black consciousness into Bahian samba percussion. Two lineages physically converge: carnival drum batteries and Kingston’s one-drop. It is its own tradition with its own history of struggle and pride in Pelourinho — not a reggae subgenre, and not Brazilian samba wearing a costume.
