Lovers Rock is a Black British scene, born in mid-1970s South London: reggae slowed into romance, with women’s voices — Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, Brown Sugar — carrying it. Produced in small studios by figures like Dennis Bovell, it was second-generation Caribbean Britain making music about interior life while the same communities faced the street outside. Janet Kay’s “Silly Games” (1979) took the scene to the top of the UK chart; its influence hums inside British pop and R&B since.
