A buoyant Studio One bassline that kept travelling. Full Up moved from Sound Dimension into dancehall, then helped carry “Pass the Kouchie” into Musical Youth’s worldwide “Pass the Dutchie.”
Full Up is another example of how a Studio One instrumental could outlive the era that created it. Sound Dimension cut the foundation at Brentford Road in the late 1960s, with the bassline becoming durable enough to support new songs years later. The most famous route came through The Mighty Diamonds, who used the riddim for “Pass the Kouchie.” Musical Youth then adapted that song as “Pass the Dutchie” in 1982 and took the melody and underlying rhythmic memory into international pop. One Kingston rhythm had become a chain of reinterpretations rather than a fixed oldie.
