Reggae’s drums push harder. Rockers keeps roots weight but drives the kick with more force and motion, a mid-1970s shift closely tied to Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and Channel One.
By the middle of the 1970s, reggae rhythm sections were looking for more forward motion than the classic one-drop feel always provided. Sly Dunbar became the drummer most closely identified with the change, developing a harder kick pattern through Channel One sessions and his work with Robbie Shakespeare. The Mighty Diamonds’ “Right Time” is one of the landmark records in the story, while Sly later described the style developing further through live work with Peter Tosh. “Rockers” is best understood as a rhythmic approach and era feeling rather than a sealed genre box: heavier, more propulsive and still deeply tied to roots reggae.
