REGGAE ROCK
Reggae groove meeting rock-band volume, punk energy, ska bounce and often hip-hop cadence. Southern California built the largest modern scene, but the hybrid travels well beyond one coast.
Reggae and rock have crossed paths since the 1970s, from British punk-reggae exchange to bands that placed Jamaican rhythm inside a guitar-led format. In the United States, Sublime became the great 1990s hinge, mixing reggae, ska, punk, hip-hop and dub in Long Beach. Slightly Stoopid, SOJA, Rebelution, The Green, Stick Figure and many others later built a durable touring and festival world around different versions of the blend. Reggae Rock is not one standardized rhythm and should not be used as a synonym for all American reggae. Some artists lean toward punk, others toward roots, jam bands, pop or hip-hop. The useful common ground is the full rock-band frame and a reggae-derived rhythmic center.
