One of reggae’s first great world travelers: singer, songwriter and the face of The Harder They Come. Jimmy Cliff carried Jamaican struggle and possibility into cinemas, charts and audiences that had barely heard the word reggae.
Jimmy Cliff began recording as a teenager with producer Leslie Kong and reached international audiences before reggae had fully settled as a name. Songs such as “Many Rivers to Cross,” “Vietnam” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” joined gospel lift, sharp social writing and pop reach without losing the voice of a young Jamaican trying to cross impossible distances. His starring role as Ivan in Perry Henzell’s 1972 film The Harder They Come changed the scale of the story. The film and soundtrack introduced reggae, Jamaican actors and Kingston’s recording world to audiences around the globe. Cliff later won two Reggae GRAMMYs, entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and kept recording through Refugees in 2022. He died in November 2025, leaving a catalog that still functions as one of reggae’s broadest front doors.
