Freddie McGregor
A child singer who grew into one of Jamaica’s steadiest adult voices. Freddie McGregor crossed ska, roots, lovers rock and dancehall while building Big Ship as a family production house.
Freddie McGregor began recording as a child in the 1960s with The Clarendonians and at Studio One, giving his career a direct line through ska, rocksteady and reggae. As an adult singer, “Bobby Babylon,” “Big Ship,” “Push Come to Shove” and “I Was Born a Winner” showed how smoothly he could move between roots conviction and romantic songwriting. McGregor also became a producer and mentor through Big Ship, founded in the late 1980s and later carried forward by his family. His longevity is not just a matter of years: few singers have remained recognizably themselves while the surrounding Jamaican rhythm changed so many times.
