Adrian Sherwood
The producer behind On-U Sound turned Jamaican dub practice loose inside British post-punk, industrial music and electronic bass culture. His mixes keep the sound system at the center even when the musicians come from somewhere else.
Adrian Sherwood founded On-U Sound around the turn of the 1980s and built a studio network where Jamaican musicians, British reggae players, post-punk artists and experimental producers could collide. Rather than treating dub as a fixed retro sound, he used the mixing desk to reorganize bands such as New Age Steppers, Dub Syndicate, African Head Charge, Singers & Players and Tackhead. His production and remix work later reached artists far outside reggae, from The Slits and Cabaret Voltaire to Nine Inch Nails, Sinéad O’Connor, Depeche Mode and Halsey. The through-line is not genre tourism but dubwise method: bass, subtraction, live effects, unstable space and the conviction that a mix can become a new composition. On-U’s influence can be heard across post-punk, industrial music, jungle, dubstep and experimental electronics.
